Guiding commuters through the night, the Richmond Ferry Terminal stands as a beacon of modernity against the historic backdrop of Marina Bay, Richmond, California. Conceived as a collaborative effort between Marcy Wong Donn Logan Architects (MWDLA) and Darrel Hawthorne Architecture and Light, this transit hub seamlessly merges contemporary design with its storied locale.
Respecting the neighboring Ford Assembly building, MWDLA eschewed mimicry in favor of materials and forms representative of the present era. Durable metal and louvers afford glimpses of natural light and the surrounding waterscape, while providing shelter to commuters during inclement weather.
Darrel Hawthorne's architectural lighting design, featuring Q-Tran WURM-SW fixtures, imbues the terminal with nocturnal allure. Illuminating the building's exterior and signage, Hawthorne's vision ensures smooth navigation and visibility for ferry users, transforming the terminal into a recognizable landmark day and night.
With meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to seamless integration, the Richmond Ferry Terminal serves as a testament to the harmonious collaboration between MWDLA and Darrel Hawthorne Architecture and Light. Its vibrant color palette, coupled with carefully chosen materials and striking lighting design, elevates it to a cherished icon within the architectural community.
