Harriet Tubman Square, located in Newark, stands as a beacon of tribute to the enduring legacy of Harriet Tubman and the city's dedication to racial equality. Designed by architect Nina Cooke John, the monument, titled "Shadow of a Face," offers a multi-sensory experience through a circular "learning wall." Illuminated by strategically placed lighting, the wall guides visitors through educational text and audio stories about Tubman's remarkable life and Newark's history of Black liberation. A towering silhouette of Tubman, shaped by steel frames at the center, serves as a poignant reminder of her monumental impact. The interactive centerpiece sculpture, complemented by mosaic tiles crafted by Newark residents, celebrates Tubman's heroism and humanity, inviting all to be empowered by her enduring legacy.
