Award of Merit Recipient at the 2024 IESNYC Lumen Awards
Located in Toronto’s historic Union Station, % Arabica’s flagship Canadian store showcases the founder’s passion for global coffee. The café features a striking floor-to-ceiling faceted wall inspired by glaciation and the local landscape. Only four types of luminaires are used to light the entire space, reflecting the brand’s minimalist design philosophy. A continuous, recessed linear light slot frames the perimeter, providing a gentle wash of light and shadow while illuminating the bulk coffee bag display.
As you approach the café, the crisp white geometric surfaces emit a welcoming glow, contrasting sharply with the black architectural storefront. Reflected ambient light from recessed downlights and linear accents enhances this contrast. Baristas and coffee machinery are highlighted by edge-lit floating shelves and white Corian counters illuminated from above.
In spite of a busy ceiling cavity, the fixtures are meticulously positioned, transforming the café into a spacious, glowing oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the train station.
