Understanding Lighting Fixtures: The Benefits of Exact vs Optimal Lengths
In the world of lighting, details matter, which is why QTL offers specifiers the choice of ordering either exact-length or optimal-length fixtures. These options exist due to "cut points" on the LED strips. These are specific increments where the strip can be cut while still ensuring all diodes function properly. Different LED families have different cut points, for example our Static White strips have 1” cut points, and our RGB strips have 2” cut points.
Inside each fixture is an LED strip and the wires used to power them. While wires always create small "dim spots" – areas on the fixture that are less bright – the more significant issue affecting consistent illumination is when the LED strip does not completely fill the fixture. This is where exact and optimal fixtures come in.
An “optimal” fixture rounds down the length of the fixture’s housing based on the LED’s cut point, ensuring that the LED strip and wiring completely fill the housing and deliver full end-to-end illumination. This choice is best for continuous runs of multiple fixtures, where minimizing dim spots is crucial, and for applications where a fixture is in direct view.
The outer housing of “exact” fixtures is built to match your specified length, guaranteeing a perfect fit when its installed. However, it's essential to note that “exact” length fixtures may have dim spots at either end due to the LED and wires not completely filling the housing. Therefore, this option is suitable for single indirect view fixtures that need to span an exact distance.
To assist in the decision-making process, QTL provides detailed spec sheets that outline the differences between exact and optimal LED fixtures, helping specifiers make informed choices based on their specific lighting requirements.
In summary, the choice between “exact” and “optimal” fixtures boils down to your lighting priorities. Opting for an 'optimal' fixture guarantees end-to-end illumination, creating a seamless and visually appealing lighting effect. On the other hand, 'exact' fixtures adhere precisely to your specified length, offering customization but with the potential for shadows in certain areas.
